iPhone 5 May Be Released Today, Other News from Apple

Tim Cook, Apple’s new CEO, will be making his first big public appearance today at a conference event being held at the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, California. The conference kicks off at 10 a.m. PST and millions of phone users anxiously await to see what the company has in store.

In January, rumors began to surface that the company would release its next generation of iPhone sometime this year. These rumors were fueled even further when a prototype iPhone 5 was supposedly lost in a San Francisco restaurant. What may have sealed the deal for some news reporters was a teaser email sent out across the nation by Apple on September 27. The email featured industry related photographs with the header, “Let’s talk iPhones.”

Hopeful stories and expectations of what the newest iPhone will have in store claim that the iPhone 5 will feature be more slimline, an 8 megapixel rear facing camera, a duel processor system, and a feature that will allow the phone to be moved to other network carriers.

Some techies have had their doubts, however, pointing out that when previous generations of the iPhone have been released, that details were always leaked beforehand. Others believe that there will be no iPhone 5, just a slightly modified version of the iPhone 4 to be called iPhone 4S. Others yet believe that an iPhone 5 is on its way, but will not be made available for sale until later in the month, just in time to reach retailers gearing up for holiday sales.

Apple hinted earlier in the week that it may cease production of its iPod Classic and the iPod Shuffle, focusing production on the more popular iPod touch. With the release of a statement by the Wall Street Journal, Sprint may be next in line to feature the iPhone. The Wall Street Journal reported that the company signed a deal with Apple to for a lucrative $200M.
