Madonna May Headline Super Bowl Halftime Show

The Material Girl is reported to be in talks to headline the Super Bowl halftime show in February. A rep for the singer said “There is nothing to comment on yet,” when asked Monday if the rumors were true. If the singer takes the stage in Indianapolis, it will be her first performance at such an event. The “Like a Virgin” singer has remained mostly out of the spotlight over the last year or so.

Madonna, 53, was supposedly in consideration for the halftime show twice before in 1998 and 2000, but the deal fell through at the last minute on both occasions. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said “We have no comment” regarding the musical talent for the next Super Bowl when asked to confirm the story on Monday. The NFL took some heat from last year’s halftime headliners, The Black Eyed Peas. The group was a hit with younger fans, but did not have the broad appeal the NFL usually looks for in a halftime performance.

Some sources claim NFL officials have offered the mother of two biological children and one adopted son a “blank canvas” to orchestrate the performance with no restrictions. If Madonna chooses to perform at the event, she will join past headliners including Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Janet Jackson, Price and Paul McCartney.

NFL.com is reporting that the “Evita” star has been booked, but there is still no official confirmation from the NFL or the singer. Booking a star like Madonna could be a major coup for Super Bowl organizers. High profile stars have had their share of controversial moments from Janet Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction” in 2004 to Christina Aguilera botching the National Anthem this year. Madonna has sold more than 300 million albums throughout her career.
